The Return of a Champion. After missing the first round of AMA ATV MX Championship presented by DWT, defending Champion Josh Creamer returns to action in Pell City Alabama for the ATV Spring Nationals. Is he back for the season or the show. Josh tells it like it is.
ATVMotocross.com: Josh Creamer welcome back to the AMA ATV Motocross National Championship! Its round 2 and you come into the series a race down what has been going on since Dirt Days last season at Loretta Lynn's?
Josh Creamer: The end of the 2010 season didn't go as me and Dustin Wimmer wanted it to. Suzuki had told us that they were up in the air whether or not there would be enough in the budget to fund the team this year. We were just scrambling all the off season just trying to come up with something and nothing ever pulled together. So I went back to work in construction, actually I had gone back last year before the end of the season. Being nervous about the championship I kind of toned the whole training program down. I just wanted to finish the season and win and luckily we did that. I just kept working construction for a guy back home till I got a phone call in mid-December. That was the next time I touched a bike after Loretta's.
So what did finally break for you?
I had signed a deal to do some west coast racing and unfortunately things didn't really turn out as planned. I had to pull out of there and try to piece some things together and make as many of these AMA events as I can. I want to get this #1 plate out there as much as I can, you know you only get to run it so many times.
Very true Josh and it is something you had to work really hard to get. I know a lot of people are wondering why in the world would someone dessert the championship after he worked so long and hard to win it?
Unfortunately things didn't go too well in the off season like I said with the team. We tried to get some stuff together but we could never really get anything going with all the budget cuts and stuff industry wide. I was left scrambling really and that WORCS deal was the only thing I had on my table. I figured I will just go and try to put another championship under my belt. That was the plan, but like I said things didn't go as planned and we had to pull out of there. We did get a win out there and got a good taste for it. I will tell you though it is a whole other beast out there. You have got to give them props. I mean they ride hard and it's not motocross at all.
Do you feel you some respect in their world?
I think I might have gained a little bit of their respect after that second round win. That was probably one of the roughest tracks they race all year and after the first round we finished 4th after I got the hole shot and led for a while. I just kept dropping backwards. I didn't really expect to do that great anyways and my goal was top 5 at that first race. So I reached my goal and I was happy. But that second race I knew I had to go out there and win and we got it done.
After all you have been through these last few months Josh you seem to be really calm. What exactly is the plan now for 2011?
I am going to see how this weekend goes. As far as negative thoughts, I don't have whole lot of those left in me. It's been a really stressful past three months and I have just got to look forward and keep my head up you know. It's a tough situation and hopefully we can pull out something good. But ultimately I will see how this weekend goes and right now my plan is to hit the whole NEATV series for Motoworks/DWT. That help is truly appreciated there and it's right in my back yard and I will try and get another pro championship up there. And obviously hopefully be able to come back and defend this one as best as I can.
I understand the state of the economy and how sometimes deals don't work out you are counting on but the good thing I guess at this point is anything can still happen.
Anything can happen and right now I am up for anything.
Thanks Josh!
Thank you and I really want to thank Nick Denoble and his dad for all their help this weekend. They have kind of put me under their wing this weekend and hopefully we can come out here and put on a good show for everyone and make the fans happy. Thanks also to Motoworks/DWT for getting me wheels and tires for this weekend and Jannsen Motorsports for getting me a sweet motor for the weekend. We are hooked up and should be ready to roll.
